Wood-Land-Lakes' Land Committee
worked with a coalition of environmental, local, state and federal groups to
cap an 18-acre abandoned landfill. The goal involved control of soil erosion, sedimentation, run-off
and associated water quality problems from the barren, highly erosive site. The landfill is located upstream of Hamilton Lake, an 800-acre public lake.
Hamilton Lake discharges into the environmentally sensitive Fish Creek area.
Fish Creek contains the greatest diversity of freshwater mussels known in
the Great Lakes Basin. Three federally endangered species of mussels are
found within this unique ecosystem. It is the only place on earth where the
White Cat's Paw Pearly mussel is found. Further downstream, the Saint Joseph
River flows into Fort Wayne, Indiana and provides drinking water for over
200,000 people.
With Wood-Land-Lakes' acting as financial administrator, a group of
local volunteers were able to successfully cap and rehabilitate the area.
Ground water testing wells were installed and the first set of test results
from them indicates that there is no evidence of contamination from the
landfill.
