Forest Resources
|
| |
Managing Your Woodlot Series (DVD)
includes: |
| |
|
"How It Grows" (23 minutes) ~ deals with
the dynamics of forest development. It provides management
information that is directly applicable to the hardwood forests of
Indiana as well as other states.
"Helping It Grow" (23 minutes) ~ deals with forest development and
management. It also provides management information that is
directly applicable to hardwood forests of Indiana as well as other
states.
"Harvesting and Renewing It" (20 minutes) ~ one of the most
important tools in managing a forest is the harvesting process.
Selecting the trees for harvest that meet the management objectives of
the owner, properly marketing those trees, and seeing that the trees are
harvested properly so that erosion is minimized, water quality is
protected, damage to residual trees is prevented, and desirable natural
regeneration is promoted are all parts of a good harvesting job. |
| |
Forestry - Crop Tree Management (DVD)
includes: |
| |
|
"Crop Tree Management for the Landowner"
(34 minutes) ~ understanding that trees compete with each other for
sunlight, moisture, and soil nutrients is a basic concept for
understanding how to increase the growth rate of trees. Knowing
the tree species, how each species provides desired benefits, and being
able to assess the health of each tree provides the basis for selecting
“crop trees.” To reinforce the ideas in this video, also view
“Crop Tree Management for the Forester.”
"Harvesting Trees and Water Quality" (40 minutes) ~ these videos
originated in three different areas of the country. Each area is
concerned with the quality of water that comes from or through our
forestlands. Each area is concerned, too, about how to protect our
water resources when timber is harvested and trees are removed from the
land. The two other videos describe research on how water quality
is influenced by the forest, and how human activities may affect that
quality.
"Crop Tree Management for the Forester"
(36 minutes) ~ is a good follow-up (for everyone) to the video “Crop
Tree Management for the Landowner.” All the same points are
covered, but in a slightly different style. It shows a landowner
or forester how to select and care for trees to improve wildlife
habitat, as well as scenic beauty and timber production. It
promotes both the stewardship ethic and the idea that our forestlands
can offer many benefits. If the forest is properly cared for, such
benefits are renewable and sustainable.
"Marketing Timber" (18 minutes) ~ this
video was made in Minnesota, but the principles for marking and
marketing trees are the same throughout the United States. Many
years are needed for a tree to grow to merchantable size. It pays
to take the time to market trees properly. By law in Indiana, only
a licensed timber buyer may purchase timber from a timber grower.
Any Indiana timber grower who has timber for sale may advertise that
timber in the Licensed Timber Buyers Bulletin, published monthly by the
Indiana Division of Forestry.
"The Basics of Hardwood Standard Lumber
Grades" (18 minutes) ~ explains how hardwood lumber is graded and
why defect-free, clear wood is the most valuable.
|
| |
Forestry - Tree Farming & Oak Woodlands
(DVD) includes: |
| |
|
"Iowa Forests and Woodlands" (7 minutes) ~
gives some history of the Iowa forests and management of current forests
and woodlands. "Managing Our
Connecticut Forests" (21 minutes) ~ gives a brief history of
Connecticut’s forests and introduces the viewer to a tree farmer and his
family. The video shows how a young man is managing the forest
resources he owns so that the forest will be there for future
generations to enjoy.
"Great American Woodlots in Indiana" (5
minutes) ~ the Heck family took a piece of worn-out farm ground and over
the years have turned it into a productive forest. They have
achieved national recognition as the 1984 Outstanding Tree Farmer of The
Year as well as the prestigious Tom Wallace Farm Forestry Award.
"Managing Oak Woodlands" (29 minutes) ~
discusses the importance of maintaining the oak species in Indiana’s
hardwood forests. Explains why oaks have difficulty regenerating
naturally, and demonstrates methods of harvesting and management
practices that can be used to guarantee oak trees for future
generations.
"Renewing a Legacy of Oaks" (17 minutes)
~ discusses the importance of maintaining the oak species in Indiana’s
hardwood forests. Deals with the problem of establishing natural
oak regeneration after a timber harvest, and how to bring that
regeneration to maturity.

| |
Forestry - Career - Agriculture - Urban
(DVD) includes: |
| |
|
"When a Tree Falls" (28 minutes) ~
illustrates several viewpoints related to conservation as well as the
utilization of trees. Throughout this video people of various
disciplines discuss their interests and attitudes toward trees and the
environment. You will see and hear from a tree farmer, a logger, a
forester, a wildlife action group, and the general public regarding the
management of our forest resources. In addition, an educator
teaches children “how to think, not what to think.”
"Natural Resources - A Career Choice that
Matters" (6 minutes) ~ explores careers in the field of natural
resources.
"Forestry Careers - An Intricate Balance"
(12 minutes) ~ explores what modern-day foresters do, and how their jobs
are becoming more challenging.
"Sustainable Forest Management" (25
minutes) ~ discusses how landowners can maximize the benefits of timber
stands on their property.
"Putting Roots in Your Community" (12
minutes) ~ communities have a valuable, but often overlooked resource.
Trees! Trees planted along streets, in parks, yards, and wooded
areas in the community form an urban forest. Most city residents
don’t realize it, but they live in this urban forest. Over 75% of
the population now lives in or near cities and towns, and trees and
other natural resources have a major impact on the environment in those
urban areas. This video focuses on the benefits of a healthy urban
forest, and what some of the threats to urban forests are. Individuals
from government agencies and citizens groups show how communities all
over the state are working to plant, care for, and protect their urban
trees. A community that cares about its future should care for its
trees.
"Sensible Wood Cutting Tips" (25
minutes) ~ whether you’re using a chain saw to fell trees, cut firewood,
or clean up around the yard, here are some basic tips and techniques
that can make your cutting experience safer and more productive.
"Tree Planting and Agriculture" (39
minutes) ~ for many years, trees have been cleared from large areas of
land to make the land suitable for agricultural production. Now we
are finding that trees can help increase crop production, reduce soil
erosion, and make our lives more pleasant through snow dispersal,
protection from wind, and beautification of our surroundings. All
the principles of tree planting are covered in this Minnesota
Extension-produced video, and these principles can be applied in
Indiana.

"Land of Life – A Celebration of Wildlife
Habitat on Private Lands" (52 Minutes) ~ did you know that 70
percent of America’s fish and wildlife habitat is on privately-owned
land? That’s why we owe such a debt of gratitude to the farmers,
ranchers, and other landowners who are working to maintain and enhance
our nation’s rich wildlife heritage. In the last 15 years, through
conservation programs and partnerships, they have established millions
of acres of productive fish and wildlife habitat on their farms and
ranches.

Drought can
affect communities and populations in numerous ways such as: not
enough water for our cities and towns (municipal water); not enough
water for growing crops (agricultural water); not enough water for
streams, rivers, and lakes (water for recreation and wildlife); not
enough water for our forests thus affecting forest health and increasing
fire danger. Although we cannot stop or control drought, we can
plan for and minimize impacts of droughts.
