Plant a Row for the Hungry gives the farmer or
gardener, who plants an extra row/acre or has a plentiful crop, a way to
donate surplus vegetables and fruit. This is a good means of taking
locally grown food from the field or garden and putting it in the hands
of local food pantries, soup kitchens and group homes. Donations of any
size will quickly be distributed to feed the hungry.
If you have a deck, patio, balcony or even a small
backyard, you can help. No amount is too small or too large. You can
choose one plant, one row, one acre or more and designate it a
"volunteer." Some vegetables and fruits that have a longer shelf life
include sweet corn, potatoes, peas, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, green
beans, squash, zucchini, onions, beets, pumpkins, apples and pears.
For those who want to donate directly to a local food pantry, soup
kitchen or Community Harvest Food Bank member agency,
contact information is available for Indiana counties in northeast
Indiana. |
